这套书的书名——《释经者圣经注释》（The Expositor's Bible Commentary）界定了其写作目的。它是释经家为释经者而写，目的是要给传道人、圣经教师和研经者提供一套关于新旧约各书全新及全备的注释。本注释的立场属于重视学术的福音派观点，确信圣经是神的默示，它完全可靠，且有绝对的权威。78位撰写人分别来自美国、加拿大、英国、苏格兰、澳大利亚、新西兰及瑞士；他们隶属于不同的宗教团体，包括圣公会、浸信会、弟兄会、循道会、卫理会、拿细耳会、长老会及改革宗等教会。他们当中大多数人任教于学院、大学或神学院。
没有哪一本书像圣经那样被人硏究得更深入、时间更长久。从以斯拉时代的米大士注释（Midrashic commentaries）开始到部分死海古卷、教父的文献，一直到今日，圣经都在为人所钻硏阐释。在一些时期，释经的确处于基督教发展的前沿，例如在宗教改革及此后的某些时期。路德是一位大有能力的解经家，加尔文至今仍被称为“释经家王子”。
他们的后继者为数不少。现在，各种新的译本如潮涌现，它们的流通量之大是前所未有的，这使得阅读圣经的人数大大增加，正确的解经也变得刻不容缓了。
这不是说神的道会受到解经者的掣肘。在芸芸书籍中，圣经极好地融合了清晰与深奥两种特性。一个孩童能够因着相信圣经对基督的见证而“有得救的智慧”，最广博精深的学者也不能穷尽神的真理的深广（提后3:15；罗11:33）。如大格列高利（Gregory the Great）所说：“圣经有如一条奔腾的溪流，大象可以在其中畅泳，羊羔也能在其间行走。”由于圣经如同发掘不尽的宝藏，解开圣经的真义仍是圣经学术领域的长期任务。
释经的方式必然会反映释经者的基本观念。每一位圣经学者都有他的前设，本套注释的编者及作者也不例外。他们都坚信记载在默示经文里的超自然的基督教真谛。他们的目的不是要以这套书取代大量现存的宝贵注释。实际上，他们从这些书籍中获益匪浅。本注释的目的在于萃取当代福音派学术硏究的精髓，制作出一套帮助人们理解圣经的新的参考书。
一部经得起时间考验的注释书应当超越当代圣经硏究的潮流，以免批判的潮流一改变它也变得过时。有些人误认为圣经批判研究本身是不可取的，其实不然。当学者们研究某卷书的作者、写作时间、文学特色、写作目的等问题时，他们就是在做圣经批判研究。同样地，为了尽可能地确定经文原来的形式，他们也要评定各抄本中的异文、抄写员的错误、所修订的内容，以及抄本中的其他现象。这些工作对于负责任的解经与讲道来说是不可或缺的。分辨假设与事实、猜测与真理总是必要的。
本注释采用的释经原则主要是“文法-历史释经法”（grammatical-historical method）。这意味着，解经者的主要目标是弄清楚经文在其写作时代及背景中的意思。这种方法致力于了解受默示的作者当初到底说了什么，不能跟死板的字面解释混为一谈。圣经运用了许多象征和比喻手法，更有大量内容属于诗歌体裁。但是，当圣经以这种形式表达时，其真实性并不次于那些涉及历史和教义的经文。要明白其中的信息，我们必须注意语法、句子结构、字义、成语及文学形式等因素，而所有这一切又与经文的历史文化背景相互关联。
本书的作者们难免反映出不同的信念。在某些有争议的问题上，我们的方针是，作者不仅要清楚表明本人的立场，还要公允地介绍他人的看法。关于末世论，作者们的解释虽有差异，但基本上都是前千禧年观点。（不过，不是所有作者都属于前千禧年派。）由于预言不单只是预测未来，所以本注释书也恰当地对先知书中占较大比重的社会问题予以关注。
《释经者圣经注释》的定位是学术著作，但基本上不属于技术性批判。在其主要的释经部分及卷一（一般及特殊论著），所有的闪族文和希腊文都予以音译并给出对应的中英文词语；“注解”部分使用闪族文及希腊文字母，但总是附有音译和中英文含义，尽可能地让不熟习原文的读者也可以使用这个部分。
英文版的主编及宗德文出版社（Zondervan）编辑部的同工们认为，有关圣经的著作应当兼具简明及学术深度两样优点。因此，他们都尽力使本书读起来清晰易懂。
本注释书采用的圣经译文是新国际译本北美版（New International Version, North American Edition）。我们要感谢国际圣经公会（International Bible Society）允许我们使用这一最新的圣经译本。各位编辑和出版单位之所以选择这个版本，是因为它行文简洁优美，且忠于原文。
